The diagram below shows how glass bottles are recycled and made into new glass containers. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
What the chart shows
A flow diagram in seven stages showing how glass bottles are recycled, arranged as a cycle. First, used glass bottles are collected from households at bottle banks. Second, the collected glass is sorted by colour (clear, green and brown). Third, it is crushed into small fragments known as cullet, and any metal caps or plastic labels are removed at this stage. Fourth, the cullet is fed into a furnace and melted at a temperature of about 1,500 degrees Celsius. Fifth, the molten glass is moulded — blown into shape in a mould to form new containers. Sixth, the newly formed bottles are cooled slowly. Finally, the finished bottles are returned to bottling plants, where they are filled and sold, after which they can be collected again and re-enter the same process. Overall, the process is continuous and cyclical rather than linear, and it can be divided into two broad phases: the preparation of the waste glass (collection, sorting and crushing) and its manufacture into new containers (melting, moulding and cooling).
