You will hear two students, Lauren and Daniel, discussing their project on students' exercise habits with their tutor. First, you have some time to look at questions 21 to 26.
Now listen carefully and answer questions 21 to 26.
TUTOR: So, Lauren, Daniel, your survey of students' exercise habits. How did you actually recruit people?
LAUREN: That was harder than we thought. Our first idea was to stand at the gym entrance, but Daniel pointed out that would only ever catch people who already exercise.
DANIEL: Right, it would completely skew the sample. So instead we sent the survey to a random list of students the college gave us, which meant we reached the inactive ones too, not just the keen gym-goers.
TUTOR: Sensible. And your biggest headline finding?
LAUREN: Honestly, the thing that jumped out wasn't how much people exercised, it was why they stopped. We'd expected the main barrier to be money, gym fees and so on, but overwhelmingly it was lack of time, coursework mostly, that pushed exercise out.
TUTOR: Interesting, not cost. And did the type of exercise matter for wellbeing?
DANIEL: Less than we assumed. We thought team sport would beat solo exercise hands down for mood, but actually, as long as people did something regularly, the effect on mood was much the same whether they ran alone or played in a team.
TUTOR: Good. Now, one thing I'd push you on, your data on sleep.
LAUREN: Yes, we know. We asked people to estimate how well they slept, but we've been honest in the write-up that a proper study would measure that objectively, with a device, rather than relying on people's own impressions.
TUTOR: I'm glad you flagged that limitation yourselves. Now let's talk about who did what, because your poster needs crediting. Daniel, you designed the questionnaire?
DANIEL: No, actually that was Lauren, she's better with the wording. I did the statistics, all the number-crunching.
Before you hear the rest of the discussion, you have some time to look at questions 27 to 30.
TUTOR: My mistake. So Lauren, the questionnaire, Daniel, the analysis. And the literature review at the start?
LAUREN: We brought in our third member, Priya, for that, she read all the background studies and wrote that section.
TUTOR: And the poster design itself, the layout and graphics?
DANIEL: That's down to me as well, I enjoy that side.
TUTOR: And who's presenting it on the day?
LAUREN: We've agreed Priya will do the talking, she's the most confident on her feet.
TUTOR: Excellent, a good division of labour. Let's look at your charts.
That is the end of Section 3. You now have some time to check your answers.
