You will hear a telephone conversation between a woman who wants to rent a storage unit and a member of staff at a storage company. First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 7.
Now listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 7.
MAN: Good morning, Kingsway Self-Storage, Tom speaking. How can I help?
WOMAN: Hello, I'm hoping to rent a storage unit for a few months, and I wanted to check a few things first.
MAN: Of course, I can take all the details over the phone. Could I start with your name?
WOMAN: Yes, it's Laura Pearce.
MAN: Is that 'Pierce', like the actor?
WOMAN: No, everyone assumes that. Mine is spelt P-E-A-R-C-E.
MAN: Pearce, with the 'ea', thank you. Now, what will you be storing? That decides the size you need.
WOMAN: It's the contents of a one-bedroom flat, I'm going travelling for a while. A sofa, a bed, a wardrobe, and a fair few boxes.
MAN: Right. We do three sizes. The small is really just for a dozen boxes, far too tight for furniture. The large takes a whole three-bedroom house, so you'd be paying for fresh air. The medium is the one for a flat like yours.
WOMAN: The medium, then, that sounds right.
MAN: Good. And when would you like to start?
WOMAN: Could it be the third of April?
MAN: Let me check the calendar. Ah, the third's a Sunday, and we don't do move-ins at the weekend, no staff for the paperwork. I could do the Friday before, the first, or the Tuesday after, the fifth.
WOMAN: The first is a bit soon for me, so let's say the fifth of April.
MAN: The fifth it is. Now, cost. The medium is normally sixty pounds a month. But because you're taking it for more than three months, it comes down to fifty.
WOMAN: Fifty a month, that's better than I feared.
MAN: There's a deposit too, refundable when you leave. It's normally a hundred pounds, but there's a promotion on this month, so for you it's seventy-five.
WOMAN: Seventy-five, even better.
MAN: Now, access. The outer gate is open from six in the morning. Reception closes at six in the evening, but, and people find this handy, you can still reach your own unit right up until nine at night, using your gate code.
WOMAN: Until nine, that's really useful, I'll often come after work.
MAN: We don't provide the padlocks, by the way. You'll need to bring your own padlock on move-in day, or buy one from reception for a few pounds.
WOMAN: I'll bring my own.
Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 8 to 10.
MAN: And the best number to reach you on?
WOMAN: It's oh-seven-nine-six-six, then one-two-one, then four-eight-oh.
MAN: Let me read that back, oh-seven-nine-six-six, one-two-one, four-eight-oh.
WOMAN: That's it exactly.
MAN: Lovely. Just to confirm for the insurance form, the main contents are furniture, mostly?
WOMAN: Yes, mostly furniture, and a few boxes of books.
MAN: Furniture, noted. And finally, out of interest, how did you hear about us? Was it the advert we run on the local radio?
WOMAN: No, not the radio, I found you on a price-comparison website, actually.
MAN: A comparison website, good to know. I'll email your confirmation now. See you on the fifth.
WOMAN: Thank you very much. Goodbye.
That is the end of Section 1. You now have some time to check your answers.
