You will hear a man signing up for membership at the reception desk of a leisure centre. First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 6.
Now listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 6.
WOMAN: Good morning, welcome to Riverside Leisure Centre. How can I help?
MAN: Hi, I'd like to become a member. I'd rather sort it out here at the desk than online, if that's alright.
WOMAN: Absolutely, let's go through it together. We have three types of membership: off-peak, standard and full.
MAN: What does each one cover?
WOMAN: Off-peak lets you in on weekday daytimes only, up to five o'clock. Standard adds the weekday evenings. Full is everything, evenings, all weekend, and it's the only one that includes the exercise classes.
MAN: Hmm. I was about to say standard, but I'll definitely want to swim at weekends, and the classes appeal to me, so I'd better take the full one.
WOMAN: Full membership, good. Now, when would you like it to start? I can switch it on today if you like.
MAN: Could it start straight away, today?
WOMAN: I can, but a tip: if you wait until the first of October, that's when the new term of classes begins, so you'd get the whole block. Start today and you'd miss the first fortnight.
MAN: Oh, in that case, the first of October makes far more sense.
WOMAN: The first of October it is. And what will you mainly use the centre for?
MAN: A bit of everything, the gym, the odd class, but mostly swimming. I'm training for a charity swim in the spring.
WOMAN: Swimming as the main thing, noted. Now, every new member does a short fitness induction before using the gym. Let me see what's free. I've got Thursday evening, this coming Monday morning, or Saturday morning.
MAN: Thursday evenings I work late, and Monday I'm away, so Saturday morning would be the one.
WOMAN: Saturday morning. And for the time, I could do nine o'clock, or half past ten.
MAN: Nine's a bit early on a Saturday. Half past ten, please.
WOMAN: Half past ten, done. Do wear a pair of trainers for it. I know it sounds obvious, but we can't let anyone onto the gym floor in ordinary shoes, and you'll be trying the machines.
Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 7 to 10.
MAN: Trainers, right, I'll remember.
WOMAN: Now, the classes, which your full membership includes. We run spin, pilates, yoga, aqua-aerobics.
MAN: I did wonder about pilates, but I've heard yoga is the best thing for swimmers, so put me down for the yoga.
WOMAN: Yoga, lovely. And a swimmer's question you'll want answered, the pool. On weekdays it opens at seven, with an early members' lane from half past six. At weekends, though, it doesn't open until eight.
MAN: Eight at weekends, good to know, so no dawn swim on a Sunday.
WOMAN: Afraid not. Right, I'll set up your account. Your membership number, which you'll need to book classes on the app, is four-four-seven-one. Sorry, let me double-check that, yes, four-four-seven-one.
MAN: Four-four-seven-one.
WOMAN: And last thing, for our records, how did you hear about us? We've had posters up, and an advert in the local paper.
MAN: No, neither of those. A colleague of mine comes here and recommended it.
WOMAN: A colleague, lovely. That's everything set up, we'll see you Saturday at half ten. Enjoy the swimming.
MAN: Thank you very much.
That is the end of Section 1. You now have some time to check your answers.
